Abstract
The Journey is a three-act suite following the narrative structure of Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey”. The three acts (Departure, Initiation, Denouement) are written for orchestra, with percussion added for Acts 1 and 2 and vocalists added for Act 3. The piece reflects musical elements found in animation music from both American and Japanese traditions. Overviews of some of these elements are provided, along with explanations of the manner in which they are reflected in the original scores. The use of Campbell’s work to provide inspiration and structure for the compositions is also briefly explored. A short analysis of musical elements in the suite and a complete score are provided.
